While it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by all the information at present, staying focused on what’s important, equipping yourself with the right tools will support you in reducing your stress & anxiety levels and the emotional reactive cycle you may find yourself in.
You want your relationship to weather the storm, and being more conscious of the way you communicate will help you do this.
I have created a list of tips and strategies you can pop into your Relationship Toolbox that will support you and your relationship during and after this challenging time. However, for these to work you need to practice them on a daily basis.
Your toolbox is an invisible box full of management tools you carry with you every day and use automatically when you are in need. Some of your tools are supportive, useful and very functional. However, some can be dysfunctional and cause stress and discomfort to you. You want the supportive tools at the top particularly during stressful times not the non-supportive!
Below are 3 categories with a strategy in each one for you to try this week, so it hopefully won’t feel too overwhelming.
Let’s get into it:
Stress can play a huge part in the way we react or respond to our partner, not to mention the impact is has on our own health and wellbeing. We lose patience, our conflict management skills reduce and we struggle to connect emotionally with others.
Tip: Breathe- this technique has been proven to be one of the most powerful techniques you can use. It is a simple technique you can do at any time that will support your emotional mental state and allow you to regroup and lower your stress levels.
Directions: close your eyes (optional) – focus on your breath, take a deep breath in through your nose for the count of 3 and a releasing breath out through your mouth to the count of 6. Repeat another 4 times.
If you do this as often as you can during the day; your mind, body and family will thank you for it!
Effective Communication Tool:
Finding the right words when trying to express how you feel in any given moment can place a great deal of stress and strain on you and can affect your confidence and your ability to express your emotions and feelings freely and effectively with your partner and others.
So how can you improve the way you communicate with your partner that will support you in building a stronger connection during these stressful times?
I feel… when… because…
My ‘I FEEL… WHEN…BECAUSE…’ is a powerful tool you can use to express your feelings in the current moment instead of holding back and bottling up emotions that build resentment and ineffective reactions.
Example: I feel… lonely and unloved, when… you spend your evenings on your phone, because…I would rather us spend that time sharing and enjoying quality time together.
Improve your emotional connection with your partner:
Connecting emotionally with your partner is a lifelong effort, but during these challenging times our emotional connection with our partner is vital for us to stay connected and feel like a we are in a partnership.
In these times it is important to give yourself permission to connect more deeply with your partner, through empathetic actions and expressing your feelings and vulnerabilities openly.
- Use the word ‘I’ more often rather than ‘YOU’
- Accept your differences
- Be brave, not aggressive
- Plan an activity together
- Express gratitude and appreciation (simple but powerful)
- Release your burden of the past, focus on the here and now
Pop these tools in your toolbox and practice them daily. If you don’t practice them, they will not be there for you in your time of need.
I will be giving your more relationship tools in the coming weeks to add to your toolbox that will support you in staying connected during these challenging times.
