Recovering after a relationship breakup

When a relationship has ended, whether the decision was yours or made for you its difficult to know how to navigate through this time or what is going to make you feel good again. As difficult as it may be, know that the emotions you are feeling will pass, this is temporary. But if you would like a few effective tips on how to make this journey slightly easier read my 3 tips below.

Be kind & focus on yourself

Firstly, there is no right or wrong way to process and respond to a breakup, each person is different, and each person will grieve differently at their own pace. Stay in bed, don’t stay in bed, delete their number, or don’t delete their number. Eat a whole tub of ice cream or don’t…

The truth is there are no rules on how to transition from being in relationship to being single. What I do know is that being kind to yourself and listening to yourself is a step in the right direction.  Give yourself time and permission to process, remove expectations and judgement you place on yourself and just go with what feels right for you.

Focus on what you need and what makes you feel better. Do what’s best for yourself, even if that means staying alone for now as you figure yourself out.  Trust that you know what you need.

Talk it through

This is a pivotal time of change in your life.  You are likely going to experience a range of intense emotions like anger, sadness, loneliness, challenging thoughts and feelings of being overwhelmed and scared facing change in your life.  This is totally normal while going through stages of grief, and you’re not alone.

Talking this through and confiding in either a therapist or someone you trust cannot only help you gain new understanding and put things into perspectives, but also allows you to get it all off your chest.

A therapist can also help you with techniques and strategies that will help you process what ever it is you may be challenged by.

Connect with Friends & Family

Find the people you trust and that can be there for you when you are ready for and need company. Whether it’s a lunch date, movie date or just sitting together and chatting these are the people that will lift your spirits and make you smile again.

And lastly…

If you ever find yourself going through a break up, know that it can be a difficult road, but also know that you can take action to help make the road just that that little bit easier to tackle.
